HVAC Pipefitter

B.L. Harbert International is currently seeking an HVAC Pipefitter for the Birmingham area.


General Summary of Duties: Plan, lay-out, install, test and repair all types of piping systems, including but not limited to refrigerant, condensate, natural gas, chilled water, hot water, and condenser water piping installation, in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes, and industry standards. Work in other crafts at levels appropriate to training and skills as requested by supervision. Position will report to manager as assigned by Superintendent.

  • Plans and performs required work and repairs to commercial air conditioning systems, HVAC controls and other associated A/C and refrigeration related equipment.
  • With regard to the portion of the work assigned, develop a complete understanding of contract plans and specifications, lay-out, install and/or start-up all types of piping systems and equipment including but not limited to split systems, VRF systems, package units, pumps, chillers, cooling towers, boilers, and other mechanical equipment.
  • The ability to identify materials markings on pipe, valves, and fittings per the Bill of Material on isometric drawings to ensure proper materials are being used for the system.
  • Read and understand plans and specifications, including orthographic and isometric drawings. Visualize two dimensional drawings in three dimensions.
  • Follow established jobsite safety and regulations and maintain a safe and clean work area. Identify safety hazards you or other employees may be subject to and take all necessary corrective action to eliminate or minimize hazards.
  • Participate in the BLHI QA/QC Program for each aspect of the work.
  • Inspect subordinate’s work for compliance with the contract plans and specifications, point out deficiencies and explain, and take any corrective action needed.
  • Use appropriate hand and power tools to fit and install all types of pipe and/or similar tubular products; cut or drill holes in walls to permit passage of pipes; select specified type and size of pipe; mount pipe hangers and brackets on walls and ceilings to hold pipe; install valves, couplings and other fittings; disassemble and remove damaged or worn pipe; and lift, position and secure materials and work pieces during installation.
  • Utilizes all pipe fitting techniques and methods for different types of piping systems and pipe couplings including soldering, brazing, press, glued and fused joints
  • Understand and implement lockout/tagout procedures in a safe manner.
  • Must be able to operate in a team environment, assisting other trades such as carpentry, concrete, paint, etc. as necessary.
  • Produce quality work, meeting requirements of plans, specifications and industry standards
Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.  
  • Education – High School Diploma (or GED or High School Equivalence Certificate)Preferred
  • Experience – Minimum 5 years’ experience as pipefitter.
  • Must have a working knowledge of pipefitting techniques and methods.
  • Must be able to work with copper, carbon steel, stainless steel, PVC, and poly/HDPE, minimal work with other alloys required.
  • Must be proficient in the use of bevelers, threaders and other end prep machines.
  • Must be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers and fractions rapidly and accurately.
  • Per diem pay will be provided for out of town work for qualified candidates.
