On an aggressive, fast track schedule, Honda
Motor Co., Ltd. selected the Hanscomb-Harbert-Global Performance
(HHG) joint venture to build a state-of-the-art automotive
and engine manufacturing and assembly plant. Using a new construction
planning and scheduling model, Honda and HHG had the assembly
line operational 16 months after its groundbreaking. This timeline
is a record in the automotive industry.
The plant produces 120,000 vehicles and engines each year.
The facility is on a 1,350-acre tract of land, and includes
1.7 million square feet of floor space. The design incorporates
Honda’s flexible manufacturing system in which robotics,
assembly platforms and key machinery can be interchanged, permitting
different vehicle models to be assembled at the same plant.
This is the first Honda facility to put engine-making and vehicle
assembly under one roof. In addition to the plant, HHG managed
construction of administrative and employee service buildings
to accommodate 1,500 employees. The team also managed site
infrastructure and railroad improvements, roadways, parking,
test track, and storage and shipping facilities.
HHG provided comprehensive project and construction management
services, including full-time, on-site project managers to
oversee all phases of the job. The team began by developing
an overall construction plan, including work breakdown structure,
contract contents and project objectives.
Bill Harbert International Construction, Inc. (BHIC) was the
contractor of record for the project. In January 2000, all
employees of BHIC became employees of B.L. Harbert International
(BLHI). The management and supervisory teams now employed by
BLHI constructed the project.
