The Hugh Kaul Human Genetics
Building consists of 155,000 square feet of new laboratory
space, distributed on nine elevated slabs. The building frame
is cast-in-place concrete and the exterior skin assembly
is composed of metal studs, brick and curtain wall.
As Construction Manager, the joint venture of Harbert/Carpenter
managed this project from the demolition of the old building
through the completion of the new structure, coordinating
the work of 14 different construction packages. All
of this was
completed on an extremely tight site, with connecting buildings
on the north and south elevations in which work continued
essentially uninterrupted throughout the construction
schedule. The project
began even before the design was complete, and the multi-phased
construction was seamless.
Bill Harbert International Construction, Inc. (BHIC) was
the contractor of record for the project. In January 2000,
all
employees of BHIC became employees of B.L. Harbert International
(BLHI). The management and supervisory teams now employed
by BLHI constructed the project.
