The Just Care Columbia project consisted of additions to and
renovation of an existing 326-bed medical facility to provide
a medium security ambulatory care center. In order to meet
the special healthcare needs of the prison inmates, the
facility was designed with a wide range of medical capabilities
and requirements. The facility provides housing and treatment
for prison inmates from across the Southeast.
The design and construction fell under a combination of both
the complicated healthcare and the strict correctional/institutional
codes. Work involved the complete interior renovation of a
five-story existing hospital.
The mechanical/electrical systems were substantially replaced.
Work included extensive demolition and new interior finishes.
A new three-story administration building was also constructed
adjacent to the renovated building.
The 36,000 square foot addition was designed to match the existing
30-year-old building both structurally and architecturally.
Bill Harbert International Construction, Inc. (BHIC) was the
contractor of record for the project. In January 2000 all employees
of BHIC became employees of B. L. Harbert International (BLHI).
The management and supervisory teams now employed by BLHI constructed
the project.
