The Shelby County Adult Jail
and Sheriff's Operation Center (SOC) is designed to house
570 inmates—with an
internal expansion area within the SOC. The design intent for
this facility includes maximizing building efficiencies—incorporating
constructability solutions while minimizing structural elements.
The SOC houses the Sheriff's Administrative Offices, Records,
Dispatch, Investigations and Patrol.
The Adult Jail component has two housing units, each holding
240 inmates. The unit is octagonal in plan, with one of the
eight segments containing program support functions.
Program support functions include a booking/intake area, laundry
and food services, central plant and maintenance areas, a large
multipurpose program room for educational and religious uses,
a video installation for video education programming, an exam
room, a counseling room, a janitor's closet and a partially-covered
outdoor exercise area. The housing area is planned for future
expansion.
