The Third Brigade
Barracks Complex, Phase I & II and Phase III were two
separate projects built adjacent to each other to form a
new community for the Third
Brigade soldiers. The community includes three barracks buildings,
three company operations buildings, a dining facility, brigade
headquarters and a small HHC operations building.
The project site was an existing barracks complex, which required
asbestos removal and building demolition prior to new construction.
Phase III required temporary heating, cooling and hot water
services—as demolition of Phase I & II buildings
eliminated these services from several Phase III buildings.
In addition to the site restrictions, the project was also
complicated by its location in the middle of operating barracks,
vehicle maintenance shops and other buildings—all of
which had communication lines and water lines running through
the barracks site.
These jobs required a great cooperative effort between the
contractor, subcontractors, the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers
and Base Personnel.
The project was completed four months early despite a late
start due to a multitude of reasons—one of which was
the discovery of an existing sinkhole on the site.
The Louisville District of the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers
awarded the project an Outstanding Performance Evaluation.
Bill Harbert International Construction, Inc. (BHIC) was the
contractor of record for the project. In January 2000 all employees
of BHIC became employees of B.L. Harbert International (BLHI).
The management and supervisory teams now employed by BLHI constructed
the project.
