The Village Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant is located in Jefferson County, Alabama. It is one of nine Jefferson County water infrastructure plants. This plant primarily serves a population of approximately 235,000 people in the downtown Birmingham area. An onsite electric power generating system is required to power the large pumps and other equipment that is used to handle and treat peak flows into the plant.

The purpose of the facility is to provide a means for handling and treating excessive flows to the Village Creek WWTP during storm events and to relieve loading at the existing treatment plant. The existing Village Creek WWTP is designed to accept and treat 60 million gallons of sewage per day (MGD). The Peak Flow Wastewater Handling Facility consists of a Pump Station, Surge Basins, High Rate Filter Treatment Facility, Ultraviolet Treatment and Biological Treatment Plant.

These facilities combine to handle the excess flows and relieve the load on the existing plant.

B.L. Harbert International began work on the new 22,000 square foot Power Generation Facility on September 11, 2000 and completed the work on August 13, 2002. The Facility contains eight (8) Caterpillar generators which are capable of generating 3250 KW, each or 26 mega watts collectively, which is equivalent to 13,200 volts of emergency electrical power.

This is the largest facility of its kind with Caterpillar generators in the United States.
