The YWCA project was the complete renovation and restoration of a ten-story,
80-year-old building in downtown Birmingham. The project was complicated
by the fact that all mechanical, electrical and plumbing in the facility
was replaced while the building remained occupied by 43 residents. The
project was a complete success and was completed on time and within budget.
The owner was able to incorporate several upgrades to the project during
construction, which was accomplished within the original schedule.
The ten story, concrete framed, brick clad YWCA building underwent a complete
interior historic renovation. New plumbing, electrical, HVAC and fire sprinkler
systems were installed, asbestos was abated, and walls were demolished while
the building remained occupied. The need to simultaneously replace all existing
utilities and keep these utilities in service was a tremendous challenge, but
was accomplished through careful planning.
Bill Harbert International Construction, Inc. (BHIC) was the contractor of
record for the project. In January 2000 all employees of BHIC became employees
of B.L. Harbert International (BLHI). The management and supervisory teams
now employed by BLHI constructed the project.
