9 tips for a healthy autumn

With Daylight Savings Time behind us, the move to the shorter and busier days of autumn can be a real challenge for many as they struggle to adapt. To help ease the transition, we’ve put together 9 tips to get you ready for the even colder months ahead and to help make your autumn a little more enjoyable.

1) Start taking a Vitamin D supplement. Most of our Vitamin D comes from the sun, thus our intake decreases when the weather is colder since we spend more our time indoors during the fall/winter seasons. If you find you are not getting outside much, a Vitamin D supplement can boost your mood and your immune system.

2) Take some time to yourself. Autumn and winter are the Earth’s way of telling us to slow down. Embrace it.

3) Get your flu shot. Want to spend a week of autumn cooped up at home, suffering from fever, fatigue and aches? Didn’t think so. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “The single best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu vaccine each season.” And no, no, no, the flu vaccine cannot give you the flu.

4) Boost your immune system. You can do this by drinking plenty of water, washing your hands often to prevent sickness, and eating nutritious foods.

5) Buy in-season veggies, such as beets, broccoli and Brussels sprouts. Beets, cabbage, eggplant, kale, pumpkin, cauliflower are all great choices too. Try roasting them with just a little oil, salt and pepper.
6) Plan ahead for the colder months.
In the winter, we tend to hibernate if we don’t have things to keep us busy.

7) Moisturize your skin. Harsh temperatures can make your skin dry. And just because it’s cold, doesn’t mean you don’t need to put on sunscreen.

8) Stay active! It can be easy to just sit around all the time, but it’s important to get in some movement throughout the day. At work, get up and walk around the office or go to a local grocery store or Target/Wal-Mart to get a few extra steps in.

10) Wear layers and protect your body from the dropping temperature. Make sure you have gloves, a scarf, earmuffs, a winter coat, and warm socks.
